Honors Credit Requirements

  • Students may only apply for honors credit in orchestra at the junior and senior grade levels.
  • In addition to the regular classwork of all orchestra students, honors credit students must complete additional assignments each quarter that will be factored into their grade.
  • All additional assignments are due one week before the end of each quarter.
  • Quarter 1
    • Attend a concert outside of school involving the presentation of symphonic music. Examples would be other school's orchestra performances, performances by the Charlote Symphony Orchestra, the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlotte Civic Orchestra, or the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra. Check the Upcoming Events Page for concert opportunities.
    • Complete a composition for a solo instrument based on given criteria or prepare a solo selection.
  • Quarter 2
    • Attend a concert outside of school involving the presentation of symphonic music. Examples would be other school's orchestra performances, performances by the Charlote Symphony Orchestra, the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlotte Civic Orchestra, or the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra.     • Complete a composition for a small chamber ensemble based on given criteria or prepare a solo selection.
    • Prepare and present an audition for a major Honorary Ensemble such as Western Regionals,
  • Quarter 3
    • Attend a concert outside of school involving the presentation of symphonic music. Examples would be other school's orchestra performances, performances by the Charlote Symphony Orchestra, the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlotte Civic Orchestra, or the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra.     • Complete a composition of your own choosing and instrumentation or prepare a solo selection.
  • Quarter 4
    • Attend a concert outside of school involving the presentation of symphonic music. Examples would be other school's orchestra performances, performances by the Charlote Symphony Orchestra, the Charlotte Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlotte Civic Orchestra, or the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra.   • Additional Requirements
    • Be able to perform C, D, G, A, Bb, Eb, F major scales in two and three octaves
    • Be able to perform the three forms of the minor scales: natural, harmonic, and melodic
    • Have a basic understanding and be able to aurally recognize the intervals of a Perfect Unison, Minor 2nd, Major 2nd, Minor 3rd, Major 3rd, Perfect 4th, Tritone, Perfect 5th, Minor 6th, Major 6th, Minor 7th, Major 7th, and a Perfect Octave

Given the rehearsal nature of the orchestra class, students who elect to apply for honors credit in orchestra must be highly motivated individuals who can work on the additional assignments outside of class.
